Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility originating from the government closure and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and remains moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically analyzes BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of new jobs created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Indicate Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in September, a indication that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier attributed stems from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the bureau still issued its price statistics for September that showed that prices are rising, albeit slowly. Prices increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
