Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when dozens of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the main terminal.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the balloons.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by illegal traders - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become not financially viable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have caused EU officials to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
